Physical properties of our universe are dealt with by Physics while the mathematics behind these are explored in Applied Mathematics. Sometimes called Maths Physics, the subject encompasses trolleys going up hills, bicycles going down, ball bearings spinning around and objects floating in water. You can mathematically view cars on a roundabout, 2 ships sailing near each other, pulleys & weights and satellites orbiting our earth.

The subject is available at senior cycle and is taken at higher level only in Coachford College. The subject has a unique position of an "extra subject" in that students can take this examinable subject at the times they would normally partake in non-exam subjects. The classes are generally very small allowing a relaxed and enthusiastic atmosphere for the elucidation of mathematical problems. In 2007, a Student from Coachford College achieved the highest result in Ireland in their Leaving Cert Applied Mathematics.
