History at Coachford College involves everything from Plato to Nato! From the Rotten Romans to the Terrible Tudors and on to the Reeking Revolutionaries, students at the college get a real bird's eye view of world and Irish History. Even more importantly, however, they get to practice key historical skills, analysing documents, both from the historical period they are studying and from more academic textbooks.Students get the opportunity to conduct "webquests" where they can access huge amounts of materials for class projects through the unique resource of the internet. Everything from the diary of a young boy in Ancient Rome to the "Reformation Times" in Martin Luther's Germany is published by Junior Cycle classes in the school. We use numerous visual sources and videos as well, to give students a real taste of the periods we are studying, so that our history rooms are decorated with pictures of Michael Collins, General Zhukov and Adolf Hitler-a rather varied bunch!. It's not unusual to encounter first years watching excerpts of "A Knight's Tale" in order to experience the thrills and entertainment of a medieval tournament, while "The Patriot" is a great resource for the American Revolutionary War not to forget our own "Michael Collins".The History department in Coachford College focuses on developing student's understanding of the world around them and how it was created, seeking to create questioning individuals who have the capacity to analyse and handle data with expertise and precision. In a world which is increasingly centered around the transfer of information, discernment is a key skill and one which we hope our students incorporate through their studies with us.History is studied at Junior Cert Level and can be taken as an optional Subject in Senior Cycle at Coachford College |
