All students study French in 1st year but it becomes an option in 2nd year. Most pupils choose French.

For the Junior Certificate Examination there is an aural exam worth 44%.

Students learn how to comunícate through French in a variety of scenarios for example buying a train ticket, booking a hotel room, buying clothes, ordering food in a restaurant and much more.

French culture and civilisation is also part of the course and students learn about French regions and “départements”, food specialities, customs and traditions and historical sites.

Every year we also celebrate “la semaine française” the French equivalent of Seachtain na nGaeilge.

Pupils compete in a table quiz with questions based on French life, grammar and  French geography.

Pupils taste a variety of French food, salami, pâté, des baguettes, des croissants, des crêpes, des gaufres and of course Franch cheese.

A selection of French films are shown during classes for example “Comme une Image”, “Amélie”, “Les Choristes”, “Cyrano de Bergerac” ,“ Jean de Florette” et “Manon des Sources”.

First Year pupils participate in a poster competition promoting France and the French language.

Transition Year pupils experience French culture and civilisation through the French Exchange Programme.

For the past ten years students from Coachford College have travelled to the Lycée Saint Sauveur in Redon in southern Brittany.

The Irish students travel to France where they are hosted with French families for two weeks attending school in Redon. They are fully immersed in the French language and culture and experience first hand the French educational system.

The exchange involves a full month’s educational experience.

First and Second Year pupils correspond with French pupils through the www.TheBigChallengeClub.com

First Year pupils are communicating with pupils from Collège St Paul in Clermont Hérault in Southern France. Pupils from both schools have written letters of introduction and have exchanged projects on their schools and information on the educational systems in each country.

Second year pupils are communicating with pupils from Collège de la Vallée du Gapeau in Sollies Pont in Southern France. Pupils have exchanged letters about the food and eating habits of both countries and they have also completed a project on their own region and area.

Through The Big Challenge Club pupils can continue to comunícate with each other during the Summer months and it is hoped the exchanges will continue to flourish, encouraging pupils to comunícate in French and learn more about life in France.

Vive la France!
