Transition
Year
is a one-year optional programme, which is available to students
on completion of their Junior Certificate. Its aims are:
To
better prepare students for the Leaving Certificate.
Students have an extra year to study the core subjects
Irish, English, Maths and French, and they get to
‘try out,’ the following subjects at Leaving
Certificate level before choosing which subjects they
will study for their Leaving Certificate: Physics,
Chemistry, Biology, Shaping Space, Technical Drawing,
Home Economics, Horticulture, Environmental &
Social Studies, Business Studies and Electronics.
|
 |
To
begin the process of career exploration and to equip
students with the skills and competencies necessary to
make informed career and subject choices.
|
To
provide opportunities for students to grow in maturity
and to increase their confidence and social skills
|
To promote general, technical and academic skills with an
emphasis on self-directed learning.
|
To
facilitate th e acquisition of I.T. skills.
|
The
Transition Year programme in each school is unique and
individual to that particular school. At Coachford College
students who want to participate in Transition Year have to sign
a ‘Contract of Learning,’ in which they contract to do the
following:
Develop work and study habits appropriate to the Senior cycle,
including a commitment to do a specified amount of
homework every night.
|
Establish positive and respectful relationships with fellow
students and teachers.
|
Commit
themselves to excellent behaviour and full attendance
throughout Transition Year.
|
In
addition, students set personal goals for themselves that they
are expected to work towards during the year. Regular
assessments are used to monitor student progress and parents are
contacted immediately if any student’s progress is
unsatisfactory. In recent years, many students in Coachford
College have significantly improved their Leaving Certificate
grades through their participation in the Transition Year
programme.
